What is Industrial Design?
As defined by the IDSA (Industrial Designers of America), Industrial Design is “the professional service of creating products and systems that optimize function, value and appearance for the mutual benefit of the user and manufacturer.”
Industrial designers develop a concept and its specifications through the collection and analysis of information given to them by their clients. They are trained to prepare clear and concise recommendations through their drawings and models. Industrial designers often work within multi-disciplinary groups within an organization, including management, marketing, engineering and manufacturing. These industrial designers also maintain a practical concern for technical processes and requirements for manufacture; marketing opportunities and economic constraints; and regulatory requirements.
Why do you need Industrial Design?
The visual and aesthetic appeal of a product generally determine a consumer’s choice between two different products. This is especially true when the market offers a large quantity of products with similar function. That is why it is important to have a design that really stands out among the rest. A well developed industrial design makes your product more appealing, thus increasing its marketability and adding to its commercial value. Also the visual appeal of a product is essential if the industrial design is to be patented.
