After being in the product development industry for many years we have encountered many questions that pop up often. Here is a list of our frequently asked questions and their responses.

Product Development Questions

Awesome! You are already on your way to being a professional inventor. Now you have to decide how far you want to develop your idea. The main stages are | Sketch | 3D Model | Prototype | Manufactured Final Product. Here at Lime Design, we can help you take your idea to any of these stages. Every idea or invention is very different in regards to complexity, size, materials, and other variables. That being said, having a budget of roughly $5,000 to 10,000 for the development of less complex projects is an average standard. Contact us to set up a discovery call with our team of engineers and we will give you an accurate quote of what your project will cost to bring to life.

Every product takes a different amount of time to bring to life, depending on its complexity. It also depends on what stage you’re going to. For example, prototypes take less time than a full manufacturer-ready product. So for a fully ready product, you can expect a minimum of 5-6 months and a maximum of 12-14 months. But again every project differs, so take this with a grain of salt.

The whole process is limited by your budget. We suggest for you decide what your goal is and plan/budget accordingly, this will give you a better chance of reaching your goal.

Yes, we’ve taken a lot of our client’s products to manufacturers. We are in contact with a vast amount of manufacturers. When it comes time to manufacture your product we will go through all our manufacturers and compare apples to apples to find you the best price.

We are in contact with manufacturers all over the world. If you plan to manufacture your product in the USA or China, we have manufacturing partners in both countries. It all depends on the client’s preference.

Yes, we offer various patent protection aid for your ideas such as drawings, writings, and designs. We closely work with a few trusted patent attorneys to help you patent your idea, ensuring that it remains yours and yours alone.

There are 3 main types of patents.

Utility Patent  |  Design Patent  |  Plant Patents

Once you have an idea for a product, it’s a good idea to get a provisional patent. This patent will protect you for a year but then after this time, you have to apply for a real patent. Such as a design patent, utility patent, or plant patent. These patents will protect your idea for 15-25 years.

Having enough funds to develop your idea is a vital step in the product development process. Here are a few ways you can raise funds to get your project on its feet. 

  1. Self-funding. This is a great way to get your project started, and allows us to get the preliminary phases done. We highly encourage you to seek investors to further fund your project, so you can rapidly develop your idea.
  2. Friends & Family. Who best to back you than your friends and family? Got a cousin that believes in your idea? Offer them a partnership for a small percentage of the company (10-20% max), Maybe your dad is a heart surgeon who you can guilt-trip a few bucks out of. 
  3. Getting A Loan. Business loans, bank loans, private loans… A loan is a great way to get the money you need to further develop your project or idea right away. 
  4. Crowdfunding. Kickstarter, Gofundme, and Indiegogo are a few of the online resources you can utilize to have people around the world help fund your project to completion! Some platforms, such as Kickstarter, are all or nothing funding.
  5. Invention-Themed Reality TV. One of our clients had appearances on both Entrepreneur Elevator Pitch Edison Nation’s Everyday Edisons, where he received not one, but two different offers to have his product ideally fully funded. 

Not at all! While we may be based in South Florida, we’ve worked with clients all over the world using conference call software such as Google Meets & Zoom to keep you up to date on the progress of your project. If our physical presence is needed for the project, we’ll even fly out to your location and hand-deliver the result if need be.

We primarily use SolidWorks 3D CAD Parametric software to do the industrial design work, which makes up the bulk of the project’s 3D phase. For sculptural modeling for toys, figurines, or sculptures, we utilize ZBrush. For photorealistic renderings and animations that are made by and far for marketing materials, we use a combination of Blender and Keyshot 8 to provide optimal results.

Absolutely! We sign an NDA with you right away to absolutely ensure that your idea remains yours. We respect the confidentiality of each and every client and idea to the utmost, so please rest assured, our lips are sealed.

Of course! We can design your packaging and logos in Adobe Illustrator to stand out from the crowd. Furthermore, utilizing 3D software we can craft photorealistic renderings or animations of your product for digital storefronts, magazines, and then some. Animated ads are also well within our scope of work for marketing materials, blending both 2D and 3D.
